Landmine Victims in Cambodia - in Pictures

At the 2005 Angkor Photography Festival the renowned photo agency VII organized a workshop for photographers, run by the award winning photojournalist Gary Knight. Today we introduce the body of work produced in that workshop by American photographer Mike Brown on landmine victims in Cambodia.

Since 1979 it is estimated that as many as 40,000 Cambodians have lost limbs to land mine and UXO (unexploded ordinance) devises. The country has the worlds highest number of amputees per capita (roughly one in every 275 citizens). According to both US and Cambodian agencies there are still approximately 8-10 million mines lurking below the surface of the soil. Their removal will take decades at an expense of up to $3,000 per mine. Tragically, demining in Cambodia is often a step-by-step process that still claims as many as 50 people per month.

The images within the gallery are a brief glimpse into the daily life of a small handful of people who face a life forever altered by an inexpensive and indiscriminant weapon of war.
